Twitter is typically the 3rd most popular Social Media platform behind Facebook and YouTube. It sees roughly 300,000,000 unique users per month and over 500 millions tweets per day. It’s a giant, and shouldn’t be ignored.
Twitter Marketing offers a great opportunity for businesses to reach a global audience of new and existing customers. It doesn’t matter if you are a clothing retailer or a fleelance app developer. You can use Twitter to make connections with relevant users. Engage these connections and turn them into meaningful sales results.
It’s claimed that 66% of Twitter users have discovered a small or medium sized business via the service. 94% of users state an intention to buy from small businesses that they follow. Remarkably, 68% of users purchased from a small business because of something they saw on Twitter! So, here’s my tips for making Twitter a tool for winning customers.
Create An Awesome Profile
Your followers and anyone else who sees your tweets will also see your profile picture. So, before doing anything else you really need to design a memorable image. Whilst you’re at it, create a page header and be sure to fill in your profile details. Don’t wait till later, get it done before you go any further.

The stats show that you’d be wise to use Twitter Marketing for your small business promotion. But don’t just fire off posts and content. As with all Social Media Marketing you really need to plan ahead. Have a strategy, then get creative. Posts or “Tweets” with images are seen by far more people than those with just text. Make use of free images and photos, or meme generators. The ideal image size for Twitter is 506 pixels by 253 pixels.
Tweet content that is relevant to your business, and your target audience. This will improve user engagement, get likes and plenty of ‘re-tweets’. What better Twitter Marketing is their than having others share your content? Re-tweets, get your brand noticed by greater numbers and helps grow your following. When someone follows you on Twitter, they’re opting in to hear more from you. Followers will help your business extend its reach, drive sales, and increase awareness.

It’s also a good idea to post to other sites that aren’t your own. The goal is to keep your followers informed with great, relevant and useful content. Including only your own content is a sure way of overdoing the self promotion.
Remember to try and keep the same tone across your tweets and on different platforms!
One of the easiest mistake to make with Twitter Marketing is to have no strategy. Twitter is a fast paced free-for-all compared to Facebook. With nearly 350,000 tweets sent every minute, it’s easy for yours to go unnoticed. So, take time to create a strategy.
Decide in advance what tone your tweets will take. Then make a schedule of when you are going to send out your tweets. This should include the day(s) of the week and even the time(s). Remember people on the other side of the World, are using Twitter at different times of day. When do your target audience use the site? Do they view Twitter on the way to work between 7-8am, or later? Do your followers use it more on a certain day?
If you can’t answer these questions, do some research. Try sending our content at different times if necessary. Test which posts get the most likes and re-tweets. When you have this info, confirm your schedule and stick to it. If you need to Tweet at awkward times, use a service like Buffer to schedule them in advance. It, can even help you post at the best time of day!
A robust strategy helps ensure you keep on top of your campaign. Not only will this help keep a consistant engaging level of output, it’ll also help free up your time. With less time wasted, you’ll be free to interact with your followers. Happy followers, help spread your brand’s message. They’re also more likely to become customers. Planning ahead keeps the long-term quality high, and your customers engaged.
Hashtags are no longer a unique feature of Twitter. Facebook, Instagram and many other platforms now support them. That goes someway to showing how useful they really are. Adding hashtags to your posts, makes it easier for people to follow trends and topics of conversation. It also makes it easier for people to find your business.
A Twitter user looking at the #handmade tag is evidently interested in handmade products. So, adding this tag to your tweets means there’s a good chance you’ll get seen. Pick a tag that’s relevant to your business. This really is a simple yet effective way to get your tweets seen by more users. If you do it right your hashtag could even feature in the ‘Trending’ list on Twitter itself. Trending items get seen by millions of users so you could hit the jackpot!
But be careful. Using too many hashtags could lead to your followers getting annoyed. Ask yourself if a hashtag is really relevant or useful. If it’s not, don’t use it in your tweets. I can’t stress enough how important it is, to check how each tag is being used. Even big brands have been left red-faced after using a tag wrongly. In some cases, a poor hashtag choice has led to very bad publicity.
It’s also possible to jump on a hashtag bandwagon. Sometimes called ‘News Jacking’, reacting quickly to news or trending topics can get your tweet exposed to a huge audience. A funny post or a clever reply using the relevant tag or directed to the right user can do wonders. It’s a great Twitter Marketing trick but also very risky. Misjudge the content or sentiment of your tweet in relation to the topic and you’ll be in trouble. Twitter is regularly under pressure to control abusive content. So be prepared to be run out of town by an angry mob if things go wrong. So, think carefully before you try this technique or you could regret it.
Track Your Results
There’s really no point in posting tweets if they’re not being seen. Use Twitter analytics to view your progress, discover your top influencers, and learn more about your audience. This information can help you understand how to optimize your content and expand your reach.
Even once your campaign is up and running, don’t assume everything is ok. You may have done all the research I suggested earlier. You know what day and time to post and your tweets are getting lots of replies. So why do you need analytics? Consumers are wise, and Humans change their minds. So keep an eye on your analytics and be aware of any dips or peaks. A small dip now could be a sign of a big drop in users over the coming months. A small peak could be a clue that something really worked well.
Analytics can help you identify trends, and allow you to address them quickly before things go wrong or an opportunity is missed.
